Overall, Pokémon Trading Card Live offers a big upgrade to the online Pokemon TCG experience. You can customize them, but the overall look will be the same. Even the avatars come off a bit odd with their overly smooth features, exaggerated smiles, and empty smiles. However, when compared to other digital TCG titles, such as Yu-Gi-Oh! Master Duel or Magic: The Gathering Arena, it looks as if it hasn't pushed the innovation enough. You can now only obtain cards through Battle Pass, booster packs, and the new crafting system. However, this game will no longer support trading between players, unlike PTCGO. In this, you can advance to new tiers of competitive players. The game also now comes with a ranked mode in addition to the casual mode. Now cards are played by dragging and dropping them to their place on the board using the highlighted prompts as a guide.Īs mentioned, there will be new card types that you can collect and use. However, as this is a video game, how you play is different. It will have the same easy-to-learn but the hard-to-master flow of gameplay that involves evolving Pokemon, declaring attacks, and taking six Prizes to win. While it can be argued the game is all luck of the draw, the IRL Pokemon TCG matches are typically fairly spot on and balanced, leaving one to wonder if the game suffers from a poor and underdeveloped algorithm or if that "luck of the draw" and lady luck just really, really dislike players online more often than not.Pokémon Trading Card Live offers the same rules as the physical version. Unless you are a fan of easy wins and frustrating losses, or a die hard Pokemon TCG fan, you honestly probably will not be as amused by the balance issues the game suffers from. So while every now and then you will get the rare experience of a well balanced hand on both players ends', most of the time is spent just hoping you will pull an energy card and a worthwhile Pokemon and also hoping your opponent will too. This is especially true for the way OP decks like Mach Strike, where all you need realistically is one Gible and a energy card to evolve into Garchamp and the pain is even worse if you or your opponent has not drawn any energy cards to fight back. I have seen it happen countless times where either myself or the player against me will not draw any energy cards at all and be forced to sit idly by while getting whopped on or to just hit the concede button. While it does have it's moments in battle when you crush a player with a lesser hand or deck than you have, it also becomes rather dull when you realize that most games already have winners chosen from the start. It is literally the trading card game - online. ![]() Does not reflect what the state of the game was when it launched as I did not play it at launch. Note that this is a review is of this time I'm posting it. The other cool thing is if your a pokemon card collector and still buy pokemon cards, the pokemon packs come with a code you can put into the game so you can use in the online game. ![]() They have event which act like mini tournaments giving you a chance to win even more rewards. You earn coins in the game that you can use in the shop to buy booster packs and theme decks. ![]() There's a single player where you play against the AI and can earn booster packs or play against real people and earn rewards there as well. Other than that the game is great and completely free which is what makes the game so much better. Matchmaking pairs you up with anybody so if your new to the game you might end up playing a long time player who will have better cards. The only bad thing would be it's matchmaking. Of course because it's online it has a tiny bit more regulations but it's only to help keep the game balance. It's pretty much the card game but online. If you like playing pokemon cards then you'll love pokemon tcg online.
